Nutrition in Ayurveda

Nutrition in Ayurveda is one of the most important factors for good health. ‘Ahar’ (food), ‘Nidra’ (sleep) and ‘Brahmacharya’ (good character) are described as the tri-pillars of health. For many years, Ayurveda has mentioned prevention as its primary goal. Prevention in turn comes from healthy habits and a well informed nutrition.

Apart from the tastes, food was also classified according to its physical and physiological properties. This information was probably brought about after years of internal research and conclusions based upon numerous trials. These were apparently documented down and even edited based on the changing norms. Food was classified according to the way our physiology was affected after it was digested and also upon its basic physical nature. One basic categorization was the doshic categorization.

Vata food is dry, cold, crunchy, fermented and airy. Crisps, white flour, beans, raw vegetables, snacks are good examples. Pitta food can be represented by spice based curries, decoctions, food that has been reduced by heat for long durations. Common pitta food are coffee, tea, pickles, sauces, spicy curries, citrus fruits and so on. Kapha food is characterized by heavy, oily, sweet, slow digesting food. Bakery items, fried food, high-starch food are good examples of Kapha food.

The concept of Tridoshas is completely relatable even in today’s world due to its universal application. Getting a prakriti diagnosis for choosing the right food for various metabolic disorders could help one to prevent and cure many chronic illnesses. So if we are turning to diet for health, looking at food with the perspective of Doshas will completely change the way you order your next meal!
